NCL WINTER WAVE CAMPAIGN

NCL (Norwegian Cruise Lines) have just announced their Winter sales campaign which has resulted in some great cruise itineraries at giveaway prices. The campaign runs from 1st December until 29th February featuring their summer departures from April through to November in 2008. Their brochure prices have been discounted by £100 per person. On certain special packages available through Jetline Cruise (such as Alaska) up to $125 per cabin on board credit is available. These offers are capacity controlled and can be withdrawn at any time once capacity has been reached and so the advice is to book early.
Norwegian Cruise Lines (or NCL as it is better known) is American owned and operates one of the most modern fleets of cruise ships afloat. These ships are big and impressive floating resorts with lots of facilities, on the face of it they have nothing to do with Norway! NCL are known for their Freestyle approach to cruising where you can do what you want - when you want. When it comes to dining they have thrown the rule book away - there are no set dining times and set tables to sit at. All ships in the NCL fleet have a multitude of restaurants on board. Some are buffet style and the rest are full waiter service restaurants where you make reservations to dine in - as you would at home. For some of these restaurants there is a service charge - well worth it when you are dining in Gourmet French Bistros and fascinating Asian Fusion venues such as Teppenyaki - sheer entertainment in itself.
Unlike many cruise lines where lead in prices are based on far off October and November 2008 dates we have found some great prices from May through to August. This is the most sought after period for early bookings. Here is just a sample of what is on offer:
  • NCL Gem (Brand New Ship) 7 nights Med Fly cruise from only £599pp on 4th May. This is one of the best 7 nights cruise itineraries we have found. It sails from Barcelona visiting Malta, Naples for Pompeii, Rome, Livorno, Villefranche. This price is based on a Gatwick departure, for Customers living in Belfast we you can fly direct the day before the cruise and stay in a hotel with breakfast before your cruise with prices starting from £649pp. On the 1st of December we will have a special promotion for departures from Liverpool where prices start from just £499pp.
  • NCL Sun 10 Night Caribbean fly cruise package January - March from only £699pp. Perfect to beat the Post Christmas blues - plus there is a free upgrade to ocean view cabins on selected dates. The price includes return flights from London, 2 nights hotel stay in Miami South beach and a 7 night West Caribbean cruise.

P&O CRUISES SEEKS VOLUNTEERS TO 'TEST' CRUISES

First time cruisers are being given the chance to test out the six ships run by P&O Cruises.

Free holidays are being made available next year to 12 families, couples, or friends who have never been on a cruise with the company before in the 'Inspector Cruiso' consumer initiative.

Participants chosen by the line will receive a credit of £300 per family or £150 per couple to spend on board to ensure they get the chance to try out everything each ship has to offer.

In exchange, they will be asked for their thoughts and opinions about the cruise, from check-in to disembarkation.

The line's managing director Nigel Esdale said: "Despite the explosion in the popularity of cruise holidays and people becoming more aware of what is on offer in the market, there are still people that think cruising is not for them."

He added: "We are prepared to put our money where our mouth is and offer free holidays to people who haven't cruised with us before.

"Winners will have the chance to tell it how it is and their views will be posted on the P&O Cruises website. We want to ensure that we get the real views of new comers and transparency in the information received."

Entrants must fill in an online questionnaire; choose the ship they want to travel on and why.

The closing date for entries is February 1, 2008 with winners notified by February 28.

Volunteers who think they fit the bill can go to http://www.inspectorcruiso.co.uk/ to find out more about the requirements of being an Inspector Cruiso.

WONDERING HOW TO PACK FOR YOUR CRUISE?

Because you might need everything from tennis shorts to a tuxedo and night dresses to evening dresses, packing light for a cruise has always been a challenge. And since most cruise lines now offer a greater mix of formal, informal and casual evenings at sea, it has become even more difficult to decide what to pack.
On most cruises during a standard 7 night cruise 2 out of 7 nights would be formal attire in the main restaurant for dinner. Most cruises ships give you the option of choosing to participate - if you do not wish to then simply eat in one of the other restaurants on board. In all cases shorts and t-shirts are not permitted in the main restaurant for dinner.
During the day however in all cases it is the norm to dress as you would in a regular hotel beach resort. For excursions sensible shoes, a hat and sunglasses are advisable to get the most out of your adventures. There is no need to worry about taking towels for the beach as these are usually available from the poolside areas.
Here is a rundown on evening dress codes for some of the most popular cruise lines:

This cruise line is strictly informal and brings the freedom of a regular beach holiday on board for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are no set dining times and tables to sit at. The main restaurants are self service style buffet restaurants and there are some speciality restaurants where one pays a small cover charge and makes a reservation. In this case you would dress as you would for a smart restaurant at home. Look out for the 24 hour dining restaurant. This cruise line does not hold any formal evening s on board.
Their motto is “The cruise for People who don't do cruises". That says it all and the approach to attire on board is the same as Island cruises. Although bare feet, bare chests and swimwear in the restaurants are frowned upon. This cruise line does not hold any formal evenings on board.
This cruise lines takes the traditional approach to attire on board. In the evenings it is preferred that gentlemen wear a jacket although open necked shirt would suffice. Smart jeans, trousers and shoes are acceptable. For the formal or gala evenings a dinner suit or regular business suit would be required for the gentlemen and a cocktail dress or trouser / skirt suit would be suitable for the ladies.
"Truly Italian" is the motto of this cruise line with the traditional approach to formal, smart casual and casual attire. However the average Italian is known for designer labels, the latest in smart casual wear and glitzy glamorous evening wear. Dinner suits are not the norm on formal nights but sharp business suits and coordinates up to the eyeballs are. Cuisine on board is typically Mediterranean style and there is a choice to opt out and dine in the buffet restaurant if you wish.
Freestyle cruising – their tag line says it all. Do as you please you can take or leave the formality during the formal nights on board. There are no set dining times and tables to sit at – but there is a magnificent choice of restaurants to choose from. On board you find that restaurants are either self service buffet style or dine by reservation and so the dress code approach would be that of either dressing to go to a Pizza hut or dressing to go to a smart restaurant. For some (not all) of the dine by reservation restaurants on board there is a cover charge. Look out for the Teppenyaki oriental restaurants on board.
The approach to attire is that of many cruise lines with a couple of formal evenings per week in the main restaurant - where Dinner suits or regular business suits are suitable for the men. Cocktail dresses or skirt / trouser suits are suitable for the ladies. Alternatively opt out of formality an eat in the varied Windjammer buffet restaurants. Look out for the Chops Grill speciality restaurants on board for mouth watering melt in your mouth steaks.
On formal evenings, for ladies this is the opportunity to wear something dressy and glamorous such as a cocktail dress. For gentlemen dinner suit or regular suit and tie is fine. For informal evening’s men choose to wear any thing from jackets, open necked shirts, polo shirts and jeans. For smart casual evenings open necked shirt and trousers for the men (jackets not required) and for the ladies casual separates or dresses. P&O request that sportswear (eg: track suits / trainers) are not worn in the evening.
P&O offers 3 dining options on board: Freedom dining which is any time dining without a set table and dining time. Club dining is for the traditional set dining table and time. Finally select dining which is dining in speciality restaurants where one pays a small charge and makes a reservation.
Cunard is usually considered as extremely formal although you can get away with not having to wear a suit at all on board. However a Cunard cruise is an occasion and the chance to step out and dress up. The advice would be to go with the flow and wear dinner suits and cocktail dresses on formal nights, perhaps take a regular business suit for semi formal nights and some trendy casual jackets, shoes and trousers for the med and skirt / trouser suits for the ladies on smart casual nights. On the Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria there are main restaurants, buffet restaurants and dine by reservation restaurants to give you lots of choice and freedom.
Formal dress or resort wear is required in the dining room. Proper formal attire includes a tuxedo, suit and tie, or jacket, tie and trousers. For women, evening gowns, cocktail dresses and trouser suits are appropriate. Casual resort wear includes sport shirts and slacks, skirts and trouser suits. Shorts, T-shirts and bathing attire are not permitted in the dining room during dinner. For those guests who do not want to dress up, the Lido restaurants have a more casual dress code. Look out for the 24 hour pizzeria.
During 'smart casual' dining evenings, guests should dress as they would for a fine restaurant at home. This includes pants and open-neck shirts for men, and skirts or dresses, slacks and sweaters for ladies. T-shirts, shorts, halter tops and jeans are not permitted in the dining room and shoes must be worn at all times. Formal evenings in the dining room require a tuxedo, slacks with dinner jacket, or suit for men. Women should wear evening gowns and cocktail dresses.
Comfortable, relaxed clothing is appropriate for designated 'casual' evenings. This includes jackets and optional ties for men, and dresses or trouser suits for women. T-shirts, swimsuits, tank tops and shorts are not allowed in the dining room, Pinnacle Grill, Lido Restaurant or public areas during evening hours. Swimwear is suitable for dining at the Terrance Grill near the pool. On formal evenings, suits and tuxedos are suggested for men; women wear cocktail dresses and gowns.
CRYSTAL CRUISES
The Crystal dress code applies to all public areas of the ship after 6 p.m. Proper attire for formal evenings includes dresses and gowns of fashionable length for ladies, and a tuxedo, dinner jacket or dark suit and tie for gentlemen. Informal attire is appropriate for most nights on board the ship. For ladies, evening dresses, cocktail dresses or pantsuits are fine. Men should wear sport coats and slacks, with ties optional. Casual nights are based on days in port and the time of departure. On casual evenings, more relaxed attire is appropriate, including casual dresses and pantsuits for women, sport shirts and trousers for men. Jackets and ties are not required.
Formal night attire includes a tuxedo, dinner or dark suit for men and evening gown or fancy dress for ladies. Informal nights feature a jacket and tie with trousers for men and informal dress or trousers and blouse for ladies. Gentlemen are welcome to wear a polo shirt and trousers, while ladies can wear a trouser suit or sporty outfit, on casual nights. Specialty restaurant dining requires a jacket and tie for men and dress or trouser and blouse for women every night. Jeans, shorts and casual daywear are allowed in all dining venues before 6 p.m.
Country club casual (resort-style attire) is fine for daytime on board the ship and ashore, but shorts are not appropriate after 6 p.m. in any of the public rooms or lounges. Depending on the itinerary, evening attire also can be country club casual, informal (sport coat and tie recommended for men), or formal (black tie optional). The dress code for Alaska, Bermuda and Tahiti sailings is always country club casual. Bathing suits and beachwear is not allowed in the restaurants at any time.
THE YACHTS OF SEABOURN
Guests aboard the luxury ships of Seabourn experience the special atmosphere of formal evenings and the more informal ambience of other nights. On formal nights, tuxedos and dark suits are appropriate for men; evening gowns or other formal attire are recommended for women. Elegant casual evenings feature slacks with a jacket over a sweater or shirt for men; sundresses, skirts or pants with a sweater or blouse for women. Casual wear is welcomed in the Veranda Cafe on evenings when dinner is served there. This includes slacks and a sweater or shirt for gentlemen; skirts or slacks with a sweater or blouse for women.

CARNIVAL CRUISES ANNOUNCES “UNIQUE” ITINERARY

Carnival Cruise Lines' 2,642-passenger Carnival Destiny will launch what it calls a "unique seven-day cruise program" from San Juan featuring extended calls at six tropical destinations – St. Kitts, Antigua, St. Lucia, Barbados, Dominica, and St. Thomas/St. John.

"Carnival Destiny's new seven-day program offers consumers the unmatched opportunity to visit six different Caribbean destinations including rarely visited ports and some of the Caribbean's most popular islands, each offering unforgettable and unique experiences ashore," said Vicki Freed, Carnival's senior vice president of sales and guest services.

Featured on the new itinerary is a day-long stop at St. Kitts, an island offering a landscape of rugged mountains and dense rainforest, which serves as a dramatic backdrop to beaches that range in colour from black to golden. The island also offers examples of West Indian and Creole architecture, as well as centuries-old fortresses and plantations.

Another stop, Antigua, at 108 square miles is the largest of the Leeward Islands and known for a multitude of beaches, some 365 of them, in fact, or "one for every day of the year." Antigua also features a variety of historical sites.

The Carnival Destiny houses 18 lounges and bars, including a sports bar, wine bar, piano bar, and a multi-level theatre showcasing lavish revues. Its family friendly amenities include "Camp Carnival" and "Club O2," with facilities and activities for children and teens, respectively.

The new schedule begins next March 2.

REVERSAL OF HAND LUGGAGE RESTRICTIONS WELCOMED - BUT CONCERN OVER WIDER SECURITY MEASURES

BAA and Visit London today welcomed the government's confirmation that it is to reverse the decision to restrict airline carry-on hand luggage to one item.

The limit is to be lifted from January but security is to be stepped up at UK airports, railway stations and ports as part of anti-terrorism measures outlined by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Travellers will have to provide a range of information requested when they buy tickets as part of planned electronic checks.

Full details have yet to emerge but some reports suggested travel companies face a bill of £20 million a year compiling the information and this will be passed onto customers via higher prices.

Improved security is to be introduced at the 250 busiest railway stations as well as airports, ports and more than 100 other locations, with guidance going out to hotels, restaurants, sports arenas, cinemas and theatres.

Meanwhile, Brown said that airports would be able to seek permission from January 7 to allow passengers to take more than a single item of hand luggage onto flights. Size limits on liquids and cabin baggage will remain.

Transport secretary Ruth Kelly said: "I hope to see rapid progress across the whole country - with all airports submitting plans over the next few months.

"But some may need to enforce baggage restrictions to ensure that acceptable security standards are maintained throughout. Equally, some airlines may choose to keep bag restrictions for their own operational reasons.

"This is not about relaxing security. It's about allowing airports to take advantage of smarter technologies and improved processes to deliver a better service to the passenger."

A spokesperson for airports operator BAA said: "We welcome the announcement to relax the rules on a phased basis starting in the new year. We believe that this is a sensible approach which strikes the right balance between the needs of passengers and the legitimate demands of security."

Visit London had pressed ministers to reverse the hand luggage restrictions.

Visit London chief executive James Bidwell said: "We welcome the government's decision to reverse the restrictions on hand luggage for passengers.

"Whilst we accept that security must be the primary consideration for policy-makers, limiting baggage to one piece does not fit with the procedures of other airports across Europe and has placed London at a competitive disadvantage.

"In addition to passenger confusion, feedback from the capital's tourism industry was that the policy was detrimental to repeat trips and short-term business travellers were increasingly considering other European airport hubs to avoid London."

NCL TO CRUISE TO BERMUDA FOR NEXT TEN YEARS

Bermuda is a great cruise destination, and those living in the mid-Atlantic and northeastern USA can easily drive to an embarkation port. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) and the Bermuda Government recently announced that they have reached a long-term agreement that calls for two of NCL's ships to be deployed to Bermuda for the next 10 years, commencing 2009 and running through 2018. These ships will predominantly depart from New York and Boston and will each sail at least 22 cruises per season, making extended calls in Bermuda. The combined itineraries of the two vessels will provide for overnights in Bermuda from Sunday through Friday.

In 2009, the 2000-passengers Norwegian Spirit will sail from Boston to Bermuda, departing on Fridays, calling in Bermuda from Sunday through Wednesday. The 2200-passenger Norwegian Dawn will sail from New York on Sundays, calling in Bermuda from Wednesday through Friday. Also in 2009, Norwegian Majesty (the ship which has served NCL's Boston-Bermuda business for 15 years) will sail to St. George's, Bermuda from Charleston, Philadelphia and Baltimore.

MSC CRUISES TO RAMP UP UK CAPACITY

Private Italian line MSC Cruises is to expand its ex-UK presence over the next three years.

The line's CEO Pierfancesco Vago revealed that 2,000-passenger
MSC Lirica would be deployed in Dover in 2009 after the company makes its ex-UK debut next year with MSC Armonia.

This will be followed in 2010 with a "
larger new ship", according to Vago, who declined to give further details.

The focus comes as
MSC aims for 150% growth from the UK in 2008 when it will be operating a fleet of nine ships.
MSC is adding four vessels over the next 24 months, with MSC Poesia being christened in Dover on April 5, 2008, followed by the delivery of 3,959-passenger MSC Fantasia in December 2008. MSC Splendida will then be added and MSC Magnifica in 2010.

MSC expects to carry a total of 800,000 passengers next year and has targeted 50% growth in 2009.

Fantastia and Splendida are claimed to be the largest ships ever built by a European ship builder and will feature the new MSC Yacht Club, a range of luxury suites, leisure facilities and lounge areas with 24-our butler service.

Vago said research had told the company that there was no sign of a slowing in demand for cruising.

"We still have big growth plans. Whatever tonnage we have put into the market, the market has responded," he said at World Travel Market.

The company is also emphasising the family-friendly elements on its existing and future vessels by maintaining a children go free policy for under 18s.

INTRODUCTORY OFFER FOR AN EPIC JOURNEY

Cunard have just released an introductory offer on the Queen Mary 2 for Transatlantic crossings from New York To Southampton.. This is your chance to enjoy two memorable holidays in one at an affordable cost of just £699pp for an 8 night package including flights from London. In conjunction with Jetline Cruises you can fly to New York and experience all this city has to offer then cruise home.
Stay for 2 nights in a central Manhattan hotel – take advantage of the strong pound and shop till you drop on on 5th Ave, Perhaps stop for fresh pasta in the food court at Macys, watch the sunset over the city at the top of the Empire State Building, take in a Broadway show, marvel at the Statue of Liberty, visit Central park and check out the museums and art galleries.
After all that take a well deserved rest on board the art deco splendour of the Queen Mary 2. Be sure to try out the canyon Ranch Spa, the Planetarium, fish and chips in the Golden Lion Pub and book a romantic dinner in the Todd English restaurant. Dinner reservations in the one of the fabulous Kings Court restaurants is highly recommended for speciality waiter service dinning with an oceanview.
There are some great advantages which ever way round you choose to enjoy a Transatlantic crossing either Westbound to New York or Eastbound to Southampton.
A Transatlantic crossing is not a cruise but a voyage. It is more of an occasion than a journey – rather like a birthday is an occasion. This is the ultimate chance to relax – escape your mobile phone and your laptop, enjoy pampered luxury and self appreciation without the interruption of ports of call.
Your days are taken up deciding on where to eat, plotting your progress across the ocean, wallowing in the atrium pool on the top deck or relaxing in the many areas of the Canyon Ranch Spa. The thalasso therapy pool and relaxation lounge are our favourites. Perhaps having a read in the well stocked library or quiet contemplation in the Commodore Club over a cocktail or coffee on deck 9 at the front! Go star gazing in the planetarium or take in a lecture from one of the guest speakers on board. When the stars are not out in the Planetarium watch a feature film being screened there. Watch the world go by in the Palm Court over a civilised pot of tea or decide how much or how little you want to work out in the fitness centre. By the end of your voyage you will wonder where the time has gone and will be reluctant to disembark.
Arriving and departing from New York is absolute fun and a highlight of the cruise.
On a West bound cruise from Southampton to New York it is a pleasure to board in Southampton and start your experience immediately without having to go through lengthy check in and security procedures at the airport then waiting around in the lounges before boarding your flight to the US. Your 5 days at sea are 25 hours long to make up for the time difference between the UK and the USA. Everyone gets up at 5 in the morning on the last day to watch the Statue of Liberty glide pass as the sun rises behind the picturesque Manhattan skyline. On arrival at Brooklyn (only 20 minutes by taxi to Manhattan) you are in tune with US time and ready to enjoy a full day shopping, enjoying the sights and nightlife this city has to offer.
On an East Bound cruise from New York to Southampton and after a frantic time fitting all of the shopping and sightseeing in – it is an utter relief to board the Queen Mary 2... Throughout your time in New York there is great realisation in the fact that you have not got to endure the laborious check in and security procedures at the airport then a cramped and impatient overnight flight back to the UK. Everyone joins in the sailaway party in the afternoon celebrating the farewell to New York and the ultimate landmark sailing under the bridge as the ships horn blows for a final goodbye to the continental USA. Each day on board your clocks are adjusted by an hour so that you arrive in Southampton in tune with UK time – with no jet lag!
All in all a cruise on the Queen Mary 2 is a memorable experience more for the quality of your time on board and the relaxation … rather than the ports of call and the activities there are to do.
Our two featured westbound cruises include 3 nights hotel stay in Manhattan.

ART GETS A NEW DIMENSION ONBOARD QUEEN VICTORIA

A new self-guided art tour is set to introduce a new generation of aesthetically-minded cruisers to the collection on Cunard Cruises' Queen Victoria.

The collection's contemporary feel is appropriate for a liner named after one of the most forward-looking leaders in Britain's history, Cunard Cruises states.

Now, a museum-style self-guided tour will complement the range of artworks displayed on the vessel, with the help of Apple's iPod Touch, available to borrow onboard.

An 80-minute audio overview takes captivated cruisers on a tour of 25 of the most important pieces onboard Queen Victoria, while video interviews with artists give a new dimension to the works displayed.

"Through this extraordinarily well-researched collection, we convey the ambiance that guests expect on a liner named Queen Victoria - a sense of history and grandeur coupled with a more contemporary appreciation of modern art by modern artists and artisans," said Carol Marlow, President of Cunard Cruises.

The line recently announced that it has ordered a new ship, to be christened Queen Elizabeth.

HAND BAGGAGE RESTRICTIONS 'TO BE LIFTED' - UPDATED

Limits on the amount of hand luggage taken on flights are to be lifted soon, British Airways predicted today.

The airline revealed a 26% rise in pre-tax profits to a record £593 million for the half year to September.

BA chief executive Willie Walsh said: "More good news for our customers will be the removal of restrictions on hand-baggage which we expect soon.

"This will go a long way to relieving the hassle factor of the one bag limit."

The airline continues to staff up to record levels and has improved its baggage performance despite a 15% increase in hold luggage.

BA said the weak dollar was helping reduce costs by £100 million over last year, while premium traffic remains strong.

Walsh, speaking to the BBC, said the cost of distribution had gone down through higher use of ba.com.

The airline revealed that further improvements to its online passenger carbon offset scheme will be announced in the coming weeks.

The airline is supporting moves for greater utilisation of the two runways at its Heathrow base, saying that the airport has no spare runway capacity - it operates on the same two runways it had when it opened 60 years ago.

"As a result the company is vulnerable to short-term operational disruption and there is little it can do to mitigate against this," BA admitted.

The government is expected to announce shortly a public consultation on full utilisation of the two runways and on the construction of a short third runway.

"This would create extra capacity and reduce delays. Ending stacking before landing and queuing on taxiways would cut Heathrow's CO2 emissions by 500,000 tonnes a year," BA said.

"An increase in runway capacity would create more take-off and landing slots ad enable Heathrow to rival European hubs like Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt."

BA has set a target of improving aircraft fuel efficiency by a quarter by 2025 and aims to recycle half of its wastes and phase out the use of landfill by 2010.

In other environmental efforts, nearly half of BA aircraft now taxi to the airport terminal with one engine shut down.
